Out & About in Lisbon

Lisbon & the Lisbon Coast are both an all-year-round destination. Summers, whilst warm are rarely oppressive and the cooling sea breeze keeps it comfortable even during the hottest months. Very mild winters mean you can enjoy your short break in the winter sun in Cascais and Lisbon.

Lisbon itself has lots to delight; from taking an old electric tram up the steep hills of Lisbon to whizzing up to the top of the Santa Justa Elevator to get a panoramic view of the city of Lisbon. Do visit Alfama (the old quarter) and be sure to wear comfortable rubber soled shoes to avoid slipping on the cobbles. In the evenings, take in a Fado evening over dinner in one of the many restaurants in this area - feel free to ask us where best to go. Bairro Alto is also wonderfully lively at night – quite a young atmosphere where you will find party goers spilling out of the restaurants and bars onto the pavements to continue the party. Try the Fado houses and late night bars/clubs.

June 12th is the night of the Festival of St Anthony; the best night for trying traditional sardines in Lisbon.

Go by tram - #15 is the best - to Belem. It leaves from Praça Figueira and stops at Praça do Comerçio and Cais do Sodré before going on to Belem - a wonderful place of fountains, parks, monuments and monasteries.

Worth visiting in the Estremadura and beyond are, Óbidos, Sintra, Azeitão & Setúbal, Fatima & Nazaré. Alentejo is a little further (about 2 hours) but worth visiting are Évora and Monsaraz. The Esporão Wine Estate is worth having lunch at if you are going as far as Monsaraz.

We can offer you a day excursion at competitive rates. See our Tours section.

Out & About in Sintra

The town of Sintra is well worth a visit. Its a world heritage site and has a lot to enjoy both for adults and children, including the Moorish Castle, Pena Palace, National Palace and the mysterious Quinta da Regaleira. It also offers great shopping and restaurants. Markets in Sintra are on the 1st and 3rd weekends of each month. Take a horse and carriage ride around the villa in true turn of the century style if you want to see it all! Its Sintra's answer to the sightseeing bus.

And with Lisbon only 25 minutes away and Cascais only 15minutes, you can get all the cosmopolitan and night life you need.

A short distance away you can enjoy a lovely out door or indoor lunch at the Don Quixote Restaurant. This terrace bar is located at a windmill just a stone's throw away from the westernmost point in Europe. You'll really feel on holiday with a jug of Portuguese sangria and the incomparable view of the Guincho Beach and the Atlantic in front of you and the Sintra Hills behind. A truly perfect location for sunsets. Snacks served all day include scones and tea. Pay a visit Cabo da Roca, the most westerly point of Europe where you can enjoy a cliff top walk with spectacular views and visit to local tourism point.

There are many walking routes in the mountains (parts of it protected by World Heritage) behind Cascais, if you wish we can provide information and/or contacts to the local walking groups. Otherwise for the more adventurous traveller, we can arrange organized buggy/go-cart tours along the coastline or into the protected mountain area. (some tours need to be pre booked so that permits can be obtained for the protected areas)

The delightful old town of Ericeira (a little further north of Sintra) takes you back in time to the days when it was a tiny fishing village. Cobbled streets, white-washed houses and a plethora of restaurants and cafes offer excellent food, especially the sea-food for which Portugal is deservedly famous.

We're home now after a fabulous week in Cascais. The apartment was exactly as described and it deserves all the positive reviews. When we arrived, we weren't exactly sure where to go, but Cassie actually met us in the street which was so helpful. The information she provided us with was incredibly comprehensive and there was a house manual with even more. The apartment is in a gated complex and the security guys are there 24/7 so it feels very safe. It's about a 10 minute walk from the town centre and less than half of that to a supermarket. The layout of the studio is very clever and absolutely everything you need is provided. The bed was comfy, the aircon worked like a dream and the balcony is almost permanently sunny. Thanks again. We'll be back! (Airbnb)

Very nice apartment which was clean and well appointed when we arrived. Check-in was very easy and Cassie gave us some great tips on things to do in the area. Main selling points of this apartment are the air-con and pool for hot weather as well as the balcony, really made the difference for our stay. Apartment is in a secure complex with 24hr doorman as well as secure parking and within walking distance of Cascais centre.” (Airbnb)

“Lovely clean studio apartment. Perfect for a couple. Apartment is in a nice complex with 24 hour security porter, parking, and a big clean pool which there was only ever a few other people at. The apartment itself is well decorated and as per the description. The bed is a bit small (standard double size) but we are probably used to a bigger bed at home. The terrace was lovely to sit out on in the morning and evenings, and got some sun most parts of the day. We only had basic breakfasts but kitchen was equipped with all we needed. The size of the apartment was perfect for a couple. TV had lots of channels including some English-language movie channels. The apartment itself was a 10 min leisurely stroll from the centre of Cascais and only couple of mins from local supermarket for some basic food and drinks. The apartment was perfect for our stay. Had a lovely stay in this apartment. Myself and my boyfriend were greeted by Cassie who showed us around and was on hand to answer any questions we had. The pool is amazing and was usually empty when we went down! Location was great - short ten minute stroll into Cascais centre. Supermarket less than 10 mins away. Apartment also felt very safe with 24 hour security at the gate of the complex. Overall I would really recommend this place if you are a couple looking to explore Cascais and the surrounding areas! “A real gem of an apartment, especially because of the terrace and the night on the deserted pool area. The apartment also benefits from a good shower, which whilst over the bath was powerful and a must if you've long hair. It was our first time to Cascais and we loved it. It's a pretty resort, with a huge number of restaurants for all budgets. It is also very clean and felt safe. I finish by saying that our host Cassie was very friendly, approachable and helpful.” (Airbnb)

The neigbourhood is the centre of Cascais, it's a ten/ fifteen minute walk in a quit street. Supermarket is a 5 minute walk. Very nice bakery in the neighbourhood, it's a fifteen minute walk. “I stayed here with my husband for 9 nights in early August and it was lovely. The apartment itself is beautiful - quiet, comfortable and modern. It's exactly as it looks in the photos! The balcony was definitely a highlight, it's sunny until the evening and has gorgeous views of the coast. The pool area was so nice and we spent a lot of time sunbathing down there. It was always really quiet with no more than a handful of people there at any time. The other residents are really friendly and there were lots of sun beds and umbrellas to go around. The apartment is located an easy and pleasant 10min walk into Cascais with loads of really nice restaurants on the way. The beach is a similar distance too. There's a supermarket 5mins away with everything you need. Thanks for a lovely stay, we would definitely come back!” (Airbnb)

We have just spent 6 days at Sea View apartment, Cascais which we thoroughly enjoyed. The apartment is light and airy with a beautiful terrace with sea views. There is very comfortable seating on the terrace allowing a lovely relaxation area. The apartment is tastefully furnished with good facilities. The location is very good for the marina and Cascais centre, all within easy walking distance. The security at the apartment was very good with friendly and helpful staff. We used the pool most days, which was a nice addition.
