Out and About Locally

Out & About in Cascais and Estoril

When in Cascais, take a stroll through the local park. Parque Municipal da Gandarinha in Cascais is located opposite the marina and beside the cultural centre. Feed the ducks - or just sit at the local café and read a book whilst the peacocks strut around you.

Sit out in the late afternoon and enjoy the sunset on the Esplanade Beach Bar in Cascais (Praia da Rainha) whilst enjoying champagne sangria or overlooking the ocean at Casa da Guia over a sun down cocktail. If you have spent the day on Guincho Beach, the most romantic sunsets can be viewed from the Abano Beach Bar (BG Bar)

If you're an early riser, catch the auctions in the Cascais fish market square where the fishermen sell their daily catch. Market days are Wednesday (full market day) and Saturday, (fresh produce). On Thursdays opt for the Clothes Market in Carcavelos.

Local activities include diving, surfing, swimming, tennis, walking, sailing, cycling, fishing, horse riding, golf, wind-surfing, water skiing, mountain biking, mountaineering, roller blading on the purpose-built pathway along the coast road.

Parque Marechal Carmona - one single space resulting from the marriage of the gardens of the Palace of the Conde of Castro Guimarães and the property of the Visconde of Gandarinha. Apart from an abundance of exotic trees and shrubs, the tranquility of this park offers curious hiding places to quietly read a book or romantic tree lined pathways. Wander around the small ponds, infant playground, mini zoo, aviary, youth library, duck pond, café, museum, chapel, rose gardens etc... Right in the heart of Cascais! Open 8.30-19.45 summer & 8.30-17.45 winter

Bicycles can be hired locally (no charge) in Cascais and there is a bicycle path which stretches for miles along the beautiful coastline to Guincho Beach. Another useful service is the “Giro” Bus from outside the apt to Cascais Shopping - a shopping mall on the outskirts of Cascais & Estoril.

The Cascais tourism office is situated in the square in Cascais, for all the maps and local information you need.

The Lisbon tourism office is situated on the water front just beside the casino gardens and opposite the Estoril train station.

Night life includes the Tamariz Night Club which is practically suspended over the beach in Estoril (summertime only) and Jezebels Night Club behind Estoril Casino during the winter months. Alternatively try the club for "the young at heart" (Vangogo) or 70's retro club Rolls Royce, both in Cascais old town. Take in the International Show or Dinner & Show at the Estoril Casino.

The Artisan Fair in Estoril (behind Casino) each July and August offers handicraft and a variety of restaurants serving traditional food.

Out & About in Lisbon

Lisbon & the Lisbon Coast are both an all-year-round destination. Summers, whilst warm are rarely oppressive and the cooling sea breeze keeps it comfortable even during the hottest months. Very mild winters mean you can enjoy your short break in the winter sun in Cascais and Lisbon.

The town of Sintra is a World Heritage Site and well worth a visit.

Lisbon itself has lots to delight; from taking an old electric tram up the steep hills of Lisbon to whizzing up to the top of the Santa Justa Elevator to get a panoramic view of the city of Lisbon. Do visit Alfama (the old quarter) and be sure to wear comfortable rubber soled shoes to avoid slipping on the cobbles. In the evenings, take in a Fado evening over dinner in one of the many restaurants in this area. Bairro Alto is also wonderfully lively at night – lots of restaurants, Fado houses and late night bars/clubs.

June 12th is the night of the Festival of St Anthony; the best night for trying traditional sardines in Lisbon.

Go by tram - #15 is the best - to Belem. It leaves from Praça Figueira and stops at Praça do Comerçio and Cais do Sodré before going on to Belem - a wonderful place of fountains, parks, monuments and monasteries.

Worth visiting in the Estremadura and beyond are, Óbidos, Sintra, Azeitão & Setúbal, Fatima & Nazaré. Alentejo is a little further (about 2 hours) but worth visiting are Évora and Monsaraz. The Esporão Wine Estate is worth having lunch at if you are going as far as Monsaraz

We can offer you a day excursion at competitive rates. See our Tours section.

Out & About in Sintra

Sintra is a world heritage site and has a lot to be seen, including the Moorish Castle, Pena Palace, National Palace and the mysterious Quinta da Regaleira. It also offers great shopping and restaurants. Markets in Sintra are on the 1st and 3rd weekends of each month.

And with Lisbon only 20 minutes away and Cascais & Sintra only 15 minutes, you can get all the cosmopolitan and night life you need.

A short distance away you can enjoy a lovely lunch at the Don Quixote Restaurant. This terrace bar is located at a windmill just a stone's throw away from the westernmost point in Europe. Sit relaxing with sangria in your hand and an incomparable view of the Guincho Beach and the Atlantic in front of you and the Sintra Hills behind. A truly perfect location for sunsets. Snacks served as well as scones and tea. Pay a visit Cabo da Roca, the most westerly point of Europe where you can enjoy a cliff top walk with spectacular views and visit to local tourism point.

There are many walking routes in the mountains (parts of it protected by World Heritage) behind Cascais, if you wish we can provide information and/or contacts to the local walking groups.

Otherwise for the more adventurous traveller, we can arrange organized buggy/go-cart tours along the coastline or into the protected mountain area. (some tours need to be pre organized so that permits can be obtained for the protected areas)

The delightful old town of Ericeira takes you back in time to the days when it was a tiny fishing village. Cobbled streets, white-washed houses and a plethora of restaurants and cafes offer excellent food, especially the sea-food for which Portugal is deservedly famous.

Gastronomy

The photographs don't do this apartment justice. It is wonderfully spacious and furnished to a high standard. The complex is very safe with security men at the gate and controlled access to the block. Other residents were quiet and obviously took pride in their surroundings. Pool was always quiet with plenty of loungers and sun umbrellas. Parede itself is small but with a few nice restaurants. We particularly liked the one down at the beach.

The apartment is very handy for the train station and Lisbon is about 30 mins away.

Caiscais in the other direction is well worth a visit.

Would thoroughly recommend this apartment which is ideally situated if you are looking for a holiday where you can combine a beach and city break.

The Bafureria apartment was a beautifully maintained three bed apartment with all facilities that you could want for a 'home from home'. The grounds are well kept and both pools were fantastic - out kids especially lived the large children's pool. It is a 10 minute walk the beach which has nice sand and two good restaurants. Also close to the train station which meant.it was easy to get to Lisbon or Cascais. I would throughly recommend this place to anyone

Great apartment and great location
Review Submitted: July 6, 2011 Date of Stay: April 2011

On arrival, we were amazed by the size of the apartment and how nice it was. It was very clean and tidy. The pictures on the website of the interior were accurate but don't do it justice. The three bedrooms were all good sizes and the specification of the apartment is very good. There was plenty of space to spread out and the large living/dining room was great and very comfortable. The free wifi was a nice bonus.
From the large balcony there is a nice view of the sea. We drove to the numerous beaches, but one is definietly walkable. The apartment is within a development which has its own pools (pictured, but there is one for adults and one for children) and there is a small children's playground. There is a larger playground and coffee-shop across the road - a 2-minute walk.
The apartment is not within a bustling village or town, it is slightly set apart. However, if you have a car then this is not an issue at all. It is actually quite nice as it is very peaceful. There are plenty of restaurants and bars within striking distance.
We would definitely stay there again and would wholeheartedly recommend it.

Beautiful spacious apartment
Review Submitted: May 22, 2011 Date of Stay: May 2011

We stayed in this apartment in the first week of May 2011. We had a great time! The apartment is spacious, child friendly, well equipped and maintained. Everything that we needed was there and worked perfectly! The apartment has great views of the sea and the pools were fantastic for the kids. On the balcony you can enjoy the view and sunny afternoons as well. Also in the nearby environment there was a fantastic childrens playground and the trainstation is just a few minutes walk away. A nearby minimarket sells the best portugese bread ever! I would recommend this apartment to anyone travelling with kids! For me also very important was that the communication with owner was very prompt and effective. Really enjoyed our stay.

Fantastic base for holiday
Review Submitted: September 20, 2010 Date of Stay: August 2010

We have just returned from a 2 week stay, and have had a wonderful trip. The appartment is even better than the photos relay - there's masses of space, it is very well maintained and the pools are fantastic. We were a party of 5: 2 grandparents, a mum and 2 young children (4 and 7) and all were very well catered for. There are some great places to eat or to buy home made take away food very close by and of course it's only a few minutes drive to the beach. You could probably walk to the local one, but we preferred to go to Estoril beach. My children made friends with many children at the condominium, always a recipe for a successful holiday (!) and in fact my youngest still hasn't settled at school as she wants to return to the holiday in Portugal!
Returning to the flat, it really has everything and more that you could possibly need and we felt very at home. It was easy to keep tidy and clean with very little effort and with the sleeping area having an extra door, the adults were able to stay up in the living room without disturbing them. There's a lovely balcony to enjoy a morning coffee with a beautiful sea view and a great playground over the road as well as a small one by the pool. We couldn't have wished for more - and we would definitely return. Thanks for everything!!
